October Recommendations: Breast Cancer Awareness Month


October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More progress needs to be made to improve outcomes for Black women with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death due to cancer. Ladies and gentlemen, get checked. Go to your local 211 or local healthcare facility to find out about free breast cancer screenings in your area. Also check out the these websites for more information:


Here are some tips to help prevent breast cancer…. 

  • Keep a healthy weight.

  • Be physically active.

  • Choose not to drink alcohol, or drink alcohol in moderation.

  • If you are taking, or have been told to take, hormone replacement therapy birth control pills, speak to your doctor about the risks and find out if it is right for you.

  • Breastfeed your children, if possible.

  • If you have a family history of breast cancer or inherited changes in your BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your risk.
